Cerne Abbas, it's surrounding area and some history
Cerne Abbas lies 7 miles north of Dorchester and 11 miles south of Sherborne at the heart of the county of Dorset. It nestles beside a small river – The Cerne - and is bounded to the east and west by steep hills which form a beautiful backdrop to the village.
It's Benedictine Abbey founded in 987 became one of the richest in Dorset and dominated the valley until it's dissolution in 1539. Cerne continued as a centre of activity with regular markets and fairs being held here until, in the 1850's, major coach routes ceased to pass though the village. Despite many changes Cerne still retains it's school, general store with Post Office and a surgery, as well as many clubs and societies which cater for a wide variety of interests.
